Origin of the Name: The name Kirirom translates to “Mountain of Joy” or “Happy Mountain” in Khmer. It was bestowed in the 1930s by King Monivong.
Colonial & Royal Retreat: During the French colonial period and the 1940s–1960s, Kirirom served as an elite hill station and summer resort. King Norodom Sihanouk championed its development, building royal villas and cottages to escape the heat of Phnom Penh.
First National Park: In 1993, Kirirom was officially designated as Cambodia’s very first national park.

Location: Situated in Kampong Speu Province (extending slightly into Koh Kong Province), about 115–120 km southwest of Phnom Penh along the eastern foothills of the Cardamom Mountains.
Elevation & Terrain: Perched on an elevated plateau approximately 675 to 700 meters above sea level.
Landscape: Famous for its rare high-altitude pine tree forests (Pinus merkusii), rolling hills, scenic lakes, cascading streams, and rocky gorges.

Highland Microclimate: Thanks to its elevation, Kirirom enjoys noticeably cooler temperatures and fresh mountain breezes compared to the tropical lowlands of Phnom Penh. Average temperatures range between 20°C and 30°C year-round.
Dry Season (November – April): Mild, sunny, and pleasant with lower humidity. Ideal for hiking, camping, and mountain biking.
Rainy Season (May – October): Lush green foliage, misty mornings, and full, roaring waterfalls.
