History

Sihanoukville—originally known as Kampong Som (meaning “pleasant port”)—is a relatively young coastal city compared to Cambodia’s ancient historical sites. It was carved directly out of the jungle in the mid-1950s by a joint French-Cambodian construction project to build the country’s first and only deep-sea port following independence.

In 1964, the booming port city was officially renamed Sihanoukville in honor of the ruling prince, Norodom Sihanouk. During the 1960s, it served as a glamorous playground for Cambodia’s jet-setting elite. Following years of regional conflict and the Khmer Rouge era, the city slowly rebuilt its economy, initially attracting adventurous backpackers to its golden beaches. In recent years, Sihanoukville has rapidly modernized into a high-rise commercial center, heavily influenced by foreign investment, mega-resorts, and expanded port infrastructure.

Geography

Sihanoukville is situated on an elevated peninsula along Cambodia’s southwestern coast, opening up into the Gulf of Thailand. Located roughly 230 kilometers southwest of the capital city, Phnom Penh, its geography features a mix of urban areas, a bustling commercial harbor, and a long coastline lined with prominent sandy beaches.

The mainland is also the gateway to a stunning archipelago of offshore tropical islands, including the highly popular Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem, as well as quieter escapes like Koh Ta Kiev.

Climate

Sihanoukville features a distinct tropical climate characterized by warm temperatures year-round, typically ranging between 22°C and 35°C (72°F to 95°F). The weather is dictated by two main seasons:

• The Dry Season (November to April): The peak time for tourism. The skies are clear, the sea is calm, and humidity drops, making it the perfect environment for swimming and beach activities.
• The Wet Season (May to October): Brought on by the southwest monsoon, this period accounts for nearly 80% of the area’s annual rainfall. Downpours can be torrential, usually occurring in short, heavy bursts, with the highest rainfall levels hitting in September and October.

How to Get There (from Phnom Penh)

Traveling from the capital to the coast has become much faster and more accessible. Depending on your budget and preference, you have a few primary options:

• Private Taxi: The most flexible and comfortable option. Thanks to the modern Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville Expressway, a private car ride takes under 2.5 to 3 hours rather than the long, congested journeys of the past on older national roads.
• Express Vans / Buses: Reliable operators run scheduled air-conditioned minivans and buses via the expressway. Fares generally range from $12 to $18, and transit takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on city traffic at departure.
• Train: The Royal Railway of Cambodia operates a scenic, slow-paced train from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. It is highly affordable and offers a look at the countryside, though it takes considerably longer than the highway.

Getting Around

Public transit within the city is limited, but finding a ride is easy:

• Ride-Hailing Apps: Using local apps like PassApp or Grab is highly recommended to hail three-wheeled tuk-tuks or cars. It guarantees fixed pricing and avoids the need to heavily bargain with drivers.
• Local Tuk-Tuks (Remorks): Widely available everywhere. If you don’t use a ride-hailing app, ensure you agree on a set fare with the driver before stepping inside.
• Motorbike Taxis (Motodops): Great for single travelers taking quick, short trips.
• Scooter Rentals: Many travelers choose to rent an automatic scooter for around $5 to $7 a day to explore the outer beaches at their own pace.

What to Do

• Island Hopping: Sihanoukville serves as the main launch point for speedboats heading to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. These islands boast beautiful turquoise water, white-sand beaches, and excellent snorkeling or diving spots.
• Relax at Otres & Ochheuteal Beaches: Take a stroll along the newly renovated beach promenades. While parts of the city are highly developed, areas around Otres Beach still offer pleasant spots to catch a beautiful sunset over the Gulf.
• Explore Ream National Park: Located just outside the city center, this protected area features dense mangrove forests, diverse wildlife, and isolated beaches perfect for nature lovers.
• Visit Wat Krom & Wat Leu: Perched on hills overlooking the town, these beautifully constructed Buddhist temples offer peaceful surroundings and stunning panoramic views of the ocean and the city skyline.
• Indulge in Seafood: Sihanoukville is renowned for fresh, locally caught seafood. You can enjoy fresh grilled prawns, crab cooked with locally sourced Kampot pepper, and traditional Cambodian fish amok right by the coast.
